Search Engine Optimisation - Top 10 Tips    Search Engine Optimisation

8) Fill in your Alt tags

Alt tags (Alternative tags) are assigned to your images in case either someone does not want to download pictures or for some reason cannot download images. In place of the image will be the alt tag. You can also see an alt tag by moving your mouse over an image. Alt tags are also a good idea because there is quite a bit of evidence to point towards the search engines placing some value on having them, although it should be pointed out that trying to manipulate them by stuffing a heap of meaningless keywords into them will probably be a very bad thing to do.

I have seen quite a few sites out there that have alt tags 25 words long which is clearly ridiculous, and I am surprised that they would think the search engines would be so naive as to be tricked by something like this.
It reminds me of a skit from a great show called 3rd rock from the sun. Dick Solomon was having to do his tax return and having an awful time of it when he had a brainstorm, he decided to claim a Cessna light aircraft on his tax return, he then spent the next 3 minutes boasting about how easily it was to fool the tax department, and how stupid the human race was, that was just before he got a knock at the door from the auditor....

This is a good analogy because it shows that when you are unfamiliar with something it is easy to believe that you can outsmart it. The best thing to remember here is that whatever crazy scheme you can think up about fooling the search engines, many thousands have already thought about it, and the search engines are now sophisticated enough to flag obvious manipulation tactics.

9) Become An Expert

Well you probably already are in your field and that's exactly what I am talking about. You have already done all the hard work, all those years of training, making all those mistakes which leads to what's called experience.

Now all you have to do is work out a way of letting the world know how good you are at what you do. Find newsletters, trade magazines, local papers that target your audience and start sending in articles. Don't just email them, if possible pick up the phone and talk to the editors, it is surprising, they can be just as keen to receive an article as you are publishing it.

You can even kill two birds with one stone by creating your web site material and then packaging that up as an article seeing as you have already done all the hard work. If your business is primarily targeted towards your local market, get out there and network, meet people, join clubs. With all this technology doing everything for us these days, its easy to become isolated, but if people can put a face to the name, the chances of you getting business out of them increases markedly.

10) Keep Your Web site Relevant

So you've done all the hard work, and now you are starting to see some results, things are good. Now is not the time to down tools and pat yourself on the back (O. K pat yourself on the back) but don't put those tools down. Your web site needs ongoing maintenance, no you do not need to spend hours a day keeping maintained.

For example a web site of this size takes about an hour a week of maintenance, just to keep things relevant, just to give it the feeling of being cared for, Internet surfers can usually tell if a web site has been neglected or not, and once this has been established, they will not stay very long.
