Avoiding Data Loss

You've just settled into the office to work on that urgent proposal that's taken 2 weeks to compose and is due in today. You hit the start button on your computer then head off and make a coffee. This has become a ritual mainly because the computers are about 4 years old and take about 5 minutes to fully load up.

Over the years you have thought about updating the network, after all it started as one computer back in 1988 and you have added computers as needed. You make backups fairly regularly but there is no set schedule, its usually every friday.

You come back to your computer and notice that there's still a blank screen, thinking its nothing you try restarting, nothing happens. A lump starts to form in your throat.
Because you only call an I.T support services company when things go bad, you don't really have a relationship with any I.T companies in the area. You ring around desperately trying to get someone to come out.

Common Causes Of Data Loss

Normally you at least get a recommendation before hiring someone to do a job, but right now you are in a bad spot and just want someone to come out and fix the problem.
The best you can expect in this situation is that you will have to pay an enormous amount of money to someone who knows what they are doing. The worst that can happen is to pay someone an enormous amount of money who does not know what they are doing.

The technician arrives and after a short amount of time tells you that your hard drive has had a catastrophic failure and needs to be replaced. This is reinforced by the knocking sound coming from the PC that's been gradually getting worse for the last week, how were you to know? If it ain' t broke, don't fix it is something you've been taught since you were a kid!

Data Lost

You explain to the technician the situation and how important it is to get the information back. The first thing he asks you is do you backup your data, your heart sinks even further as you realise that the last time you did a backup was just prior to starting the proposal. You were so wrapped up in getting it completed that some of your usual "less important" tasks were put to one side.

You resign yourself to the fact that the last 2 weeks worth of work by you and 2 of your staff has been completely wasted, plus all the other information that you know was important but have no record of is gone, and you find that because its Adelaide, and everyone knows everyone, your reputation has taken a battering as well because you have let down people you made promises to, and it gets out what happened so existing clients get nervous and think that maybe you do not look after their information properly and you find you start to lose existing business, at best this scenario will set you back months, at worst it could bankrupt you. In short its a great big snow ball rolling downhill fast, completely avoidable in hind site.
